The Wake at the
Abbey Theatre

It’s the nineties. It’s small town Ireland. Vera’s back. Welcome to The Wake by legendary Irish playwright Tom Murphy, directed by Annabelle Comyn.

The O’Tooles are at each other’s throats. Vera has inherited the family hotel. But what are her plans? Alone in the world, she takes drastic action; locking herself in the hotel with her brother-in-law and Finbar Reilly her unlikely childhood sweetheart, in tow. ‘What other society, town, civilised country would put up with it?’

Welcome to the world created by legendary playwright Tom Murphy. For over 40 years, his plays have probed the Irish psyche. The Abbey’s long-awaited revival of The Wake is a brilliant critique of the materialism of Irish life.

‘Annabelle Comyn’s direction is wonderfully alive to this vision of Murphy’s’
Irish Independent on The House (2012)
